Hi, everyone, A quick note to address some of the questions you’ve been asking me recently—I’ve got answers!
First, thank you for spending your most valuable resource—your time—with me and with the people whose determination, work, and often extraordinary bravery have shaped the science and politics of climate. Your presence here means the world.
To those of you who are new or who’ve stumbled upon this space by chance: welcome!
Who I am
So, I’m Athena Drakou, also known as The Climate Historian. This site was born to meet my need for a space to tell the stories of the people and events that have shaped—and will continue to shape—the future of our planet. These stories matter, and I’m determined they won’t be forgotten.
Many of you have asked about my presence on social media, so let me say a few things about that.
I strongly believe in the power of the written word. As Alexandre Dumas wrote in his masterpiece The Count of Monte Cristo: "I have always had more dread of a pen, a bottle of ink, and a sheet of paper than of a sword or pistol."
So, I write. No videos, no podcasts—just words. Also, these extra ventures demand resources, time, and money—all of which I’m blissfully short on.
I deleted my Facebook account in 2016, for reasons that I don’t think I need to explain, and haven’t looked back since. Life without an extra algorithm has been refreshingly simpler and undeniably happier. Surprisingly (or not), I still stay connected with the people who matter and I still see and enjoy real conversations with friends.
Similarly, I deleted my Twitter account when it became X. I will never go back. I chose not to support what I see as a platform that perpetuates autocracy, hatred, sexism and racism.
I don’t have a LinkedIn account. Believe it or not, I’ve built a career—and even multiple jobs—without it.
What I do have is this:
For the past four years, every Friday evening, I’ve sent a newsletter - a mix of reads and links, scattered musings, book reviews, news, and announcements. It began as a Mailchimp-only thing (where you can still subscribe), but now it’s open to all here on Substack.
A Mastodon account where I post about climate change and the environment.
After some nudging, I opened a Bluesky account, but I must admit, I am not a big fan and I rarely use it.
I also have a Discord and a Patreon page. Post about anything you want, ask questions, whatever. Most of the content is free.
As you can see self-promotion is not my strong suit, partly because I don’t see myself as a “product” or a means for tech billionaires to profit. I’m here to share knowledge, not to commodify it.
Finally, a HUGE thank you to those of you who support my work. A few years ago, I never would have imagined myself doing what I do today—partly because I never expected to become a researcher and writer, but also because it wouldn’t have been possible without your support. It’s only because of you, whether you’re reading and sharing my work or signing up for a paid subscription, you are making this possible.
Thank you!
The Climate Historian is an independent publication, entirely supported by readers like you. It has also a Discord and a Patreon page. Post about anything you want, ask questions, whatever. 90% of the content is free, but for the remaining 10% you can subscribe here.
