On this Saturday afternoon, a time typically reserved for relaxation, I find myself immersed in looking at the stark global sea and land temperatures. February 2024, as shown in the graphs below, is not looking good. Heat records are currently on track to be broken by a large margin as human-made global warming and the natural El Niño climate pattern drive up temperatures on land and in oceans around the world.
While the presence of a strong El Niño contributes to the elevation of temperatures, it is crucial to recognise that it operates in conjunction with other factors. The interaction of the different factors introduces some uncertainty; however, on the graph below, you can see what global warming looks like without El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar activity.
