While writing my LLM thesis, I cited a paper by Shirley Scott, who argues that competing ideologies are either defeated or absorbed if the dominant ideology is to be maintained. This holds true in the legal field. It is my hope that the polarized ideologies in the USA are finally coming to a head and kindness will win the day. I think one huge element is what you mentioned: dis- and misinformation. We’ve got to invest in local news and support journalistic integrity while curbing absolute BS. Meanwhile, we need to act to build our community resilience, happiness, and a better future. Maybe showing them the way to a harmonious life is better than arguing with them. We just do it and invite them to join.

Absolutely. It’s such a shame that local journalism is fading away—it’s always been so important for keeping communities informed and connected. Bringing it back is going to be really tough, especially with all these powerful interests and division out there now. But I completely agree with you—building strong community ties and resilience is so important. When communities are connected united, it lifts everyone up and creates a better foundation for a healthier and happier world.

Btw, what is the title of the paper you are referring to?

For anyone reading this, I did a post on how to get journal articles for free. One option is asking people who have access to share, and I’m happy to! No longer at Uni but I saved lots of papers, including this one. I’ve also got a great one on decolonizing international law re: the ocean and it goes into the history of UNCLOS (united nations conv on the law of the sea)
